Research Explorations - Dr. Lauren E. Kohut: "Farming Landscapes in Peru: Using Archaeology to Understand Adaptations to Warfare & Changing Climates"
The Andes mountains of Peru pose a number of challenges to farmers: high elevations and unpredictable weather patterns mean that frost, snow, and hail are year-round risks; steep mountain slopes are subject to landslides and erosion; and generally arid conditions mean that water is almost always a concern. Despite these challenges, farmers have developed a range of successful strategies that include cultivating crops and herding llamas and alpacas. This session will discuss how geospatial technologies and archaeology can be used to understand how farmers adapted to changing climates and warfare in the past, and how this research can benefit local communities in the present.
