Research Explorations: Dr. Chen Chen and Jadden Bergholm (Virtual Cultural Event)

*Virtual Cultural Event*

Dr. Chen Chen, Assistant Professor Of English, and Jadden Bergholm, WU alum, will present, "Communicating about COVID-19 from China and Transnationally: Citizen Technical and Professional Communicators." The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in Wuhan, China in early 2020 has led to a lot of grassroots efforts in communicating about various needs and concerns regarding the risks of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and various relief and response efforts. As a researcher and teacher of technical and professional communication, I’ve been examining different forms of citizen communications by the Chinese diaspora community both in China and transnationally, afforded by networked digital media but challenged by power imbalances along political, cultural, and social lines. The presentation will discuss the rhetoric of such communications through qualitative case studies.

Research Explorations, a collaboration between Dacus Library and the College of Arts and Sciences, is a speaker series that showcases Winthrop faculty and student research projects. Guest speakers will not only present and discuss their current research projects, they’ll also explain their research methods and processes, such as how to search for sources, how to form research surveys and get IRB approval, how to write abstracts, and how to present research. These are all important skills for new researchers to learn and model, and these presentations are designed to help students learn how to build a framework for structuring their own research projects.
